This webinar introduces NREL's REopt tool and its new Portfolio Analysis capabilities. REopt is a free and publicly available tool accessible by user-friendly web interface or by open-source code to help users evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of distributed energy resources (DERs), including solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, battery storage, geothermal heat pumps, combined heat and power, and thermal energy storage. The new Portfolio Analysis capability in the REopt Web Tool enables users to screen multiple facilities for DERs to inform prioritization for deeper dive analysis. This training will include an introduction to REopt and an overview and demonstration of the REopt Web Tool's Portfolio Analysis capabilities.

Instructors

Amanda Farthing, Research Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Amanda Farthing is a research engineer in the Accelerated Deployment and Decision Support Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. She specializes in techno-economic modeling of distributed energy resources (DERs). At NREL, she develops and utilizes REopt, a modeling platform for DERs, to support federal agencies, international organizations, communities, and others in achieving their energy, resilience, decarbonization, and financial goals.

Indu Manogaran, Research Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Indu Manogaran is a research engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Indu develops and utilizes NREL's REopt tool in performing technoeconomic analyses to inform on-site distributed energy strategies and decisions. She provides technical assistance for domestic and international stakeholders to support their renewable energy, resilience, and climate goals. Additionally, she supports the development of REopt's model capabilities and its webtool interface.

Matthew Lowlavar, Program Manager, Federal Energy Management Program

Matthew Lowlavar is a program manager at the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (DOE FEMP) focused on Energy and Project Procurement Development Services for federal agencies. He currently leads the On-Site Distributed Energy program. The On-Site Distributed Energy program supports federal agencies in identifying and implementing on-site projects by providing technical assistance and trainings and developing tools and resources. Matthew has extensive knowledge in power generation, transmission, and distribution in both private and federal sectors. Matthew holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Florida State University and a BS in Nuclear Medicine from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify REopt's capabilities;
  • Recognize how to complete a basic PV and battery screening using REopt Web Tool's Portfolio Analysis capability;
  • Identify how to use the outputs of the Portfolio Analysis screening capability for more detailed DER assessments.
